ABOUT THE HISTORIC SOUTH INITIATIVE
MISSION
Historic South Initiative develops bold, long-term, measurable strategies and facilitates partnerships to promote the ongoing development of a vibrant, thriving Old South End neighborhood.
HISTORY
The Historic South Initiative was created in October 2014. Bill Boeschenstein, former CEO of Owens Corning, recommended that a very successful neighborhood revitalization program in Atlanta (East Lake) be emulated and brought to Toledo. The first step was to create a study-group to identify the feasibility of this type of project. Once it was determined to move forward, the study-group then chose the Old South End/Broadway Corridor as its focus. This was based on the condition of the housing, the educational statistics of the neighborhood, the percentage of home-ownership occupancy, the lack of primary services and the realization that there was no major organization/community development enterprise operating in this neighborhood.
The focus of HSI includes: education, housing, community services and job training/placement. Since many of the current issues surrounding this neighborhood have occurred over several generations, our vision is that it will take 20-30 years to see lasting results. We are committed to this time-frame.
The original name of this initiative was CABCOT, Inc. This is an acronym for Chuck and Bill Community of Tomorrow. Two of our Honorary Chairmen are Chuck Oswald and Bill Boeschenstein. These gentlemen are the inspiration for this effort.
